RED Thread

Thumbies,

Yes, it is that time of year again when we see RED THREAD. I've already received numerous calls concerning this lawn nuisance. Red Thread is simply a fungus...a fungus that has potential to do some harm...but it is still a fungus. Best guess, the ENORMOUS amount of rain is the culprit. Red Thread is a disease (much like mold) that loves water, cool nights and warm days. It occurs every spring. Why do some lawns get it and others don't...beats the heck out of me.

I have clients that are right next to each other. I service one then the other. Same day, same machine, same fertilizer - same everything and one gets it and the other doesn't. I can only assume that the one that gets it has a weaker grass and/or the rain washed the nitrogen out before it could do its job.

SOLUTION...keep fertilizer program on schedule! Too little nitro or too much nitro could only promote the fungus. Also, we can spray the entire lawn with a fungicide and this will NOT cure the lawn-----it will only stop the progression. What this means is that your lawn will go back to looking normal.

TIP OF THE DAY...Rest in peace Macho Man. Randy "MACHO MAN" Savage died today. He was a professional wrestler and a brilliant entertainer. I have not watched wrestling since the late 90's. As a kid back in the 80's, I can remember watching the Macho Man jump off the top rope and slam his elbow into his opponent laying on the mat. Wow...the memories are just flowing in now. Regardless...may he rest in peace!
