This might be the last week to mow your lawn. The weather forecast calls for a beautiful week, but as we all know, it will be turning cold very soon. My Thumbies have noticed their grass has begun to slow its growth, which is normal for this time of year. As for me, I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around not mowing my lawn until next season. Consequently, my best friend Glen Livet has made his yearly visit. This time of year, nobody comforts me like he does.
Preparing your lawn for the winter should be a fairly simple process...if you have kept up with your lawn all year. Trim your ornamentals / perennials, remove your annuals and rake your leaves. Thumbies always ask me about the leaves on their lawns. In a perfect world, a lawn should not have leaves on it over the winter. But, this is not a perfect world and a few leaves left on the grass will not hurt. However, you should still try to remove most of the leaves - NOT mulch them with your mower. Excess dead stems, roots, leaves and other organic debris contribute to thatch.
The layer of thatch in your lawn should not exceed 1/2 inch in depth. The thicker the layer of thatch, the more difficult it is for fertilizer and water to penetrate the roots and soil. I'm always asked if I de-thatch lawns. No...I do not believe in de-thatching since most de-thatchers destroy any layer of thatch. Remember, Mother Nature put that layer of thatch there for a reason.
TIP OF THE DAY...Scotch and Pizza - breakfast, lunch and dinner of champions!
