2010 Discount Deadline

Just a reminder to all my Thumbies, the deadline for receiving the 10% discount is December 18, 2009. Renewals are already coming in for next year and to those clients I say, "THANK YOU"! As always, any questions you may have, either blog, email or call me.

Last week should have been the last time you mowed your lawn. The grass is staying wet and the growth has slowed. Notice I said 'slowed' and not 'stopped'. Many people think their grass grows from spring until winter, goes dormant, then 'pops' in early spring. This is wrong when it comes to Kentucky Bluegrass, the grass that covers most of our lawns here in Southwestern PA. True, other grasses do go dormant in the winter, but not Kentucky Blue.

The time period for Kentucky Blue to go somewhat dormant is in the summer, when there is little water and very high heat. Kentucky Blue spreads by rhizomes (horizontal roots) and this is what can fill-in those bare spots. Root growth is at its highest rate in fall and spring, its lowest is in the summer. Soil temperature for root growth is best when it is near 60 degrees (F) and at its worst above 70 to 80 degrees (F). Hence, I like to seed in the fall and never in the summer. Seeding in the spring can be a bit tricky with the cold weather, crabgrass control (which controls ALL seeds...including grass seed) and the approaching summer weather. The old saying holds true, "Plant grass in the fall for a nice lawn in the spring". I'm sure there is a catchier phrase...but you get the picture.

Once again, thank you for your early renewals!

TIP OF THE DAY...Conservatives and Liberals both tie their shoes the same way...one just does it better!
