Why is it so warm?
No...I'm not going to say those two words that you know I don't want to say..........BUT, something is going on with this weather. As you all know, I love to ski but the weather has not been cooperating with my hobby.
I realize that we all like to have nice weather 24/7 but in this region, we (as well as our plants and yes our grass) need the snow. Having snow increases the water table and allows plants to store up. Also, the lakes and streams are rejuvenated which helps the fish (fishing...another passion of mine) and all aquatic creatures. In addition, the Polar bears need a place to live (just kidding).
As you can see, this weather is not only affecting your plants, grass, and animals...it is also affecting my hobbies and that is not cool. Anyway, we need snow and I just don't understand why we don't have it. The weather is just too warm...period! How this will affect the growing season, ie your grass, I just don't know. I'll do some research and get back to you. Have a good one!
TIP OF THE DAY...One should not use the word 'affect' too much when one writes!

Look out Loretta
Santa brought me an IPad2! Now I can blog anytime, anywhere! This thing is amazing. It can do anything and everything. Not to sound snobby but unless you have one, it is really hard to explain how great it is. Have I told you lately how much I love this IPad2?
As for your lawn...FINALLY we have snow. Not that I want to go skiing (yes, as you know, I love to ski) but we need this snow to increase the water table. Remember, if you shovel your walk or driveway please do not pile up your snow on your grass.
TIP OF THE DAY...Get an Ipad2. It will change your life!

Christmas...wow!
If your Christmas was as nice as mine then you are still smiling. Although the presents were/are very nice, spending time with my family was wonderful. Being away for the holidays gives one time to think about, at least, three things:
1. To appreciate the blessing it is just to get away. Many, many people do not have the opportunity or the means to just get away.
2. Relaxing! As my wife always says, "Doc, you don't know how to relax!". On the other hand, my girlfriend knows I know how to relax (just kidding Princess!!!!!). Seriously though, in today's world, we don't take the time to stop and smell the roses. At our home, we even have over 30 rose bushes in our yard and we still don't stop to smell them. What up wit dat?
3. Rejuvenate your mind and body for the upcoming year. Even when I am writing this, I am thinking about how hard I want to work next year...no time for relaxation. I guess there is a happy medium and when it is found, happiness will follow.
In short, the holidays seem to bring out the 'niceness' in most people. I just wish it was Christmas everyday...isn't there a song about this? Oh well, beginning with the next blog, I will again start discussing lawns, trees, bugs, diseases, fertilizers, machines, weeds, fungi, insects, grass legumes, rust, grubs, weed control, granules, red thread, power seeding, insecticides, mowing techniques, watering, Japanese beetles, drought, mold, brown patch, mites, voles and moles, calibrations, grub control, aeration, seeding, spraying, lime, herbicides, etc. Sorry...it's just in my blood.
TIP OF THE DAY...Work hard and play even harder!

Christmas vs. 'The Holiday Season'
There is no competition. Christmas is here and we will rejoice with the celebration of Christ's birth. If this offends anyone...I honestly don't care! I am not pushing my views on anyone. I am expressing my views which is permitted under free speech. It is your choice to either read this blog or go elsewhere. Period!
So...............MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone! I hope this year the spirit of GIVING is more powerful than the GREED of receiving.
TIP OF THE DAY...Ring the Salvation Army bell with your family. We just did and it is a very humbling experience!

It's raining, it's snowing...the grass is still growing
Please.....PLEASE don't stop mowing your lawn. This snow will be melted in a few days - let's not get lazy. You probably have two more mowings so just remember to make your last cut low. Don't mow your grass so low that you are scraping dirt (like a neighbor in my housing plan...WOW). Anywho, just give it a few days, it will melt.
TIP OF THE DAY...Use a leaf blower to remove the snow BEFORE you mow!

2 Weeks Remaining
Can you believe that we only have two weeks remaining to service? This year flew by. I know we say that every year...but this year really went by in the blink of an eye. First, it was raining, raining and raining. Then, it was in the 90's and dry, dry, dry. Now, it's raining, raining and raining. Well, Mother Nature can be a mad scientist at times. REMEMBER, just 'cause our season is over does not mean that my blog entries are over. I will be posting many, many posts between now and next season so STAY IN TOUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TIP OF THE DAY...Umbrella should be called Rainbrella. What is an 'um' anyways?

Time goes by so fast
We are currently doing our last service (M6 - Winterizer). Can't believe it is October. In a month, we could have snow. Actually, we had snow on Halloween a couple of years ago...WOW! Just seems like I was servicing lawns with Grub Control (June/July).
Speaking of grubs......................PLEASE....................purchase grub control in the spring so we can service your lawn with it in late spring/early summer. At this time, you will have NO damage. I have been on countless lawns that have mild to severe grub damage. Yes, these folks did not have grub control applied to their lawn. Now, they have damage and need it. Both grub controls cost the same yet if you do it now, you will have an additional expense of seeding your lawn!
Tisk, tisk, tisk!
TIP OF THE DAY...GO Steelers!

Sunny side up
Spring is here!!!!! No, I've not been drinking (again), but it does feel like spring. The sun is shining, the birds are singing (all be it Christmas songs, but they're signing) and the leaves are still on the trees...for now. As for the leaves, I get soooooooooooooo many questions about servicing lawns and leaves. Here is what you need to do...nothing!
The fertilizer will not stick to the leaves and gravity will prevail (as it ALWAYS does) and the fert. will roll off with the wind, or even when you mow. Now, if you have piles and piles and piles of leaves, yes...they should be raked. This is just common sense!
TIP OF THE DAY...Shhhh, Donald Duck doesn't wear pants, yet when he gets out of the shower...he has a towel wrapped around him!?

Are we in Seattle?
Yes, fall is here and the weekend was proof of that! Rain on Saturday, rain on Sunday, rain today. Now, don't fall off your chair(s) but we are taking today off from servicing. I know, I know...that is unheard of since we are always servicing. But, with the wet weather, I would rather NOT service lawns than rip-up the turf. You know me.....lawns, God, family! Just kidding, lawns come second.
Thumbies ask me all the time what they should be doing for their lawns this time of the year. Honestly, you should be aerating, power seeding, liming and yes - cutting the grass still at 3 inches. The last cut...THE LAST CUT...is the only cut that should be very short!
TIP OF THE DAY...Keep your umbrella open in the garage when you come home - this will let it dry out quicker!

Grubs!
Before I talk about grubs, I'd like to say one thing.....There are many, MANY companies out there willing to cut prices just to get a client. Please be aware of any company offering more for less!!!!! This is 2011 and those kinda' deals just don't benefit YOU in the end!
Now, for grubs...they're here. Even though I have seen very few beetles this year, I just saw some grub damage today. Yowsa!!!!! If you chose not to purchase grub control in late spring / early summer, we can still save your lawn. Just give us a call and we'll do a application that will control the adult grubs.
TIP OF THE DAY...If you see one grub, chances are you have several hundred!

September Special
Buy an Aeration service and receive a Lime service for FREE!!!!!
* This offer replaces any pre-existing offer(s).
Aeration and Lime
NOW...now is the time to Aerate and Lime. As you know, these are the two BEST services you can provide for your lawn. Think of Aeration as a massage and Lime as a warm, refreshing shower. You have worked all summer and decide to reward youself and your family by going on vacation...to relax. You are looking through the resort's brochure(s) to schedule daily activities and MASSAGE is there in bold letters. Doesn't a massage sound great...relaxing in a dimly-lit room, nature music softly playing in the background, candles burning a soothing scent and all you're wearing is a toasty blanket. Then, gentle but firm hands begin to massage your shoulders......oops, sorry, I dozed off again.
THIS IS WHAT AN AERATION IS LIKE FOR YOUR LAWN!!!!! You have had kids, dogs, cats, adults, tractors, lawn mowers, vehicles (hopefully not), lawn furniture, parties, etc. on it this past year. Your lawn has worked hard for you and it is time for a release. An aeration provides this. You treat yourself to a massage, why not treat your lawn to one too!?!?!?!
LIME is the icing on the cake. After a massage, you usually go directly into a warm-cool shower to rejuvenate your muscles. Lime does this but it works ALL WINTER LONG!!! Lime will stimulate new growth in the spring and make your existing roots even stronger.
Remember...now is the time! You have enjoyed your lawn all season long and now it is time to give back.
TIP OF THE DAY...AERATION AND LIME - now is the time!

THANK YOU to my THUMBIES
Thank you for your patience! This season has been one of my toughest. The weeds have taken over many lawns. The several inches of rain in the spring and the 90 degree weather has made a definite impact on my lawns. I have never purchased AND used as much weed control in the past as I have this year. At this time of the year, I am normally manicuring lawns and spot spraying sedge and small...SMALL patches of crabgrass. Unfortunately, while trying to manicure lawns, we are also spraying entire lawns with sedge control and/or crabgrass control.
The drying of the soil has created cracks and then crabgrass has re-germinated. Sedge always appears due to the intense heat and fertilizer (remember, sedge is grass and thus, can be fertilized). I am sorry that this has happened but mother nature is to blame. All we can do is control the weeds when we see them. Some lawns have been burnt while others, right next door, look beautiful. Why does this happen...again, I don't know. Are some being watered while others aren't? Is there more traffic on one lawn versus another? Are clients using additional products on their lawns (hopefully not)? I could ask many more questions but the simple fact is this...
WE USE THE SAME MACHINES, SAME PROCEDURES, SAME PRODUCTS ON EVERY LAWN. I DO THE SAME THING TO MY LAWN THAT I DO TO ALL OF MY CLIENT'S LAWNS! NO CLIENT RECEIVES ADDITIONAL SPECIAL TREATMENT(S) OR CARE THAN ANOTHER...UNLESS THAT CLIENT CALLS. LET ME REPEAT THAT....................UNLESS YOU CALL, WE CAN ONLY ASSUME EVERYTHING IS OKAY!!!!!
WE CAN NOT LOOK AT A CLIENT'S LAWN EVERY WEEK. IF WE DID THIS, OTHER LAWNS (WHICH COULD BE YOURS) WOULD NOT BE SERVICED. I ALWAYS SAY, IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION OR CONCERN...JUST CALL. WE WILL BE THERE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!
Again, I apologize for any inconvenience this season may have caused.
Thank you for patience and for realizing that I give 100% towards every lawn!
TIP OF THE DAY...We are only a phone call away!

Folks...summer is here!
Summer is here in a BIG way. I have never experienced humidity and heat like this...88-93 degrees, if not hotter. Trust me, we will NOT service your lawn when the temp. is over 85 degrees. We could probably get away with servicing but you know me...your (my) lawn comes first. Burning a lawn is very easy to do when the temp. is this high and there is no rain.
What to do when heat is excessive:
Grab a beer and go swimming! Oops, sorry...you probably thought I was going to give you advice concerning your lawn. To be honest, there is nothing you can do BESIDES WHAT YOU SHOULD ALREADY BE DOING. Just as a reminder, you should be:
- mowing your lawn at least 3 inches high
- watering your lawn everyday (instead of every 3rd day) in the morning
- keeping off your lawn during the heat of the day to avoid making burn marks
- weed wacking with a straight edge and NOT scalping the edge of your lawn
- watching your lawn for diseases
So, to sum up...when the heat is turned on, you really can't do anything. When you love your lawn like I do (and I know you do), and the heat is beating it down...you begin to understand how powerless you are when it comes to mother nature. Remember, it could always be worse!
TIP OF THE DAY: When jumping into a pool by doing a cannonball, you MUST yell "CANNONBALL"!

RED Thread
Yes, it is that time of year again when we see RED THREAD. I've already received numerous calls concerning this lawn nuisance. Red Thread is simply a fungus...a fungus that has potential to do some harm...but it is still a fungus. Best guess, the ENORMOUS amount of rain is the culprit. Red Thread is a disease (much like mold) that loves water, cool nights and warm days. It occurs every spring. Why do some lawns get it and others don't...beats the heck out of me.
I have clients that are right next to each other. I service one then the other. Same day, same machine, same fertilizer - same everything and one gets it and the other doesn't. I can only assume that the one that gets it has a weaker grass and/or the rain washed the nitrogen out before it could do its job.
SOLUTION...keep fertilizer program on schedule! Too little nitro or too much nitro could only promote the fungus. Also, we can spray the entire lawn with a fungicide and this will NOT cure the lawn-----it will only stop the progression. What this means is that your lawn will go back to looking normal.
TIP OF THE DAY...Rest in peace Macho Man. Randy "MACHO MAN" Savage died today. He was a professional wrestler and a brilliant entertainer. I have not watched wrestling since the late 90's. As a kid back in the 80's, I can remember watching the Macho Man jump off the top rope and slam his elbow into his opponent laying on the mat. Wow...the memories are just flowing in now. Regardless...may he rest in peace!

Punxy Phil...what up!
Punxy Phil states that we will be having an early spring. Between you and me, I think Phil was up all nite February 1st drinking with all the other party people. But hey, I'm just saying! Maybe we will have a early spring, even though this has been the worst winter on record for many states. And also, maybe global warming exists. Again, I'm just saying!
Whatever the case, I'm getting antsy, REAL antsy to get out there and begin to service your lawns. I look forward to seeing all of you very soon. But for now, I'm going to keep-on skiing until my skis rub some grass.
TIP OF THE DAY...Don't drink the night before a big interview, it will cloud your judgement - no matter what hole you may crawl out of!

Snow, Ice, Snowy Ice, etc.
This weather is driving me crazy. Well, not really! I'm enjoying some much needed time off and skiing is helping me relax. However, it's actually time to get back to work. My machines need fine tuning so your lawns look their very best. Supplies need to be ordered...on that note, I may be trying a hybrid-mix this year. The first two applications, as you know, are to control crabgrass. There is NO hybrid available that can compete with what I already use - Dimension plus Fertilizer. Although I would like to start off the new year with a new Hybrid, I'm choosing not to do this. I would much rather use a synthetic on your lawns than deal with missed crabgrass in late summer/early fall. As you are also aware, there is no granular or natural/organic weed control that even compares to what I use - Momentum FX. A weed-free lawn is what we strive for and Momentum FX delivers.
The BIGGEST news this season is that I was able to purchase (thanks to all of my Grassologists) new computer software. This software is really nice and will allow the Doctor to streamline everything. I'm still getting used to this new creature so bear with me. *****
*****On that note, I'm not going to mention the name of the software just yet. Why? Because I do not know if I like it 100%. When I mention a product, service, etc. on my blog, that means I have used it and recommend it whole heartedly. Until that time, it will remain nameless. I do this with colleagues as well. I am constantly asked for landscaper's and grass cutter's names. Until I have seen their work, I will not recommend them. In addition, their work MUST have been on property that I own. This way, I not only see the end product, I see how they conduct business before - during - and after the sale. Anybody can see the end result and appreciate good work. However, customer service, as you know, is HUGE with me. So, long story short, if a product or company name is used on this blog, you know that the Doctor has used it and has given his 100% approval.
TIP OF THE DAY...try not to use the same path when walking on your lawn when there is snow on the ground. Although you can not see the grass, it is still being packed down and may result in pink snow mold come spring!

Happy New Year
It's 2011!!!!! Hope all of you had a fun AND safe New Year's Eve. The weather makes me feel like spring is right around the corner. Folks, sure it is nice to not have to dress up in a parka and go outside to shovel the driveway. BUT - we need the snow to increase our water table. Trust me, I think this is the calm before the storm.
As for where I was during my travels, here is my final clue:
TIP OF THE DAY...Start your snow blower every other week during the year to avoid 'gumming-up' your carburetor.

Belated Merry Christmas
Hope you all had a great Christmas. If you didn't get everything you wanted...just look in the mirror. Hopefully, you are healthy. Hopefully, you have a loving family or even a family to love. Hopefully, you love your career as much as I love mine. And finally, hopefully...your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is getting stronger everyday. If you have at least ONE of the above, you are better-off than most Americans. Just some food for thought.
As for my trip, here is your second clue: Arnold Schwarzenegger's nickname.
TIP OF THE DAY...To avoid falling, press your shins against your boot skis!

My Grassologist...where'd he go?
Where was I? I think we all know that I went skiing. Oops, some of you didn't know that I enjoy skiing? Oh well, now you do. So, where did my family and I go skiing? First, I think we should decide what country I was in.
Here is your first clue: "My name is Bond, James Bond!"
TIP OF THE DAY...Put your ski boots on first, then your skis...it works better this way!

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow - again
I have just finished my yearly counseling on how to deal with all of this white stuff on all of my patients (NOTE to my roommate at therapy...remember, it is okay to clean your mower everyday - just don't try to cut the grass until, say, April!). Anyway, therapy was great and the doctors say that when I ski, I will NOT be hurting the grass. I've come to accept this after a few days in a straight jacket.
Being a Grassologist has it's advantages. There are no, let's just call them retreats and not hospitals, in the US that have the expertise to educate the true meaning of grassology. Hence, I just returned from being out of the country for two weeks. Where was I you ask? Well, that is the $1 million question. As for the answer, that is for me to know and for you to figure out. Seriously...I want you to guess where I was. Yes, and of course, you will be rewarded if you guess the answer first AND correctly.
So, my first clue is this...I was skiing at a much higher elevation than 7 springs!
TIP OF THE DAY...When getting off the chairlift, raise the tips of your skis!

I can't see my lawn and that makes me sad!
Old man winter has arrived and he brought some cold weather. I guess I'm just used to the heat being that I am outside everyday servicing lawns. Well, it is time for me to clean, winterize, update, etc. all of my machines. This may sound boring to some of you but not to me. I love my machines, my job and all of you (again, we've been watching waaaaaaay too many Christmas specials!!!)
Anywho, all of you should have, by now, received the renewal letter for next year. The freebie that I noted in my last post is, obviously, LIME! I believe that lime is, by far, the most essential ingredient for a lush, green lawn. Our soil is packed with clay and we can never get enough lime. I thought I would give all of you an early Christmas present (that is, all of you who pay early)! This is just a small way of saying THANK YOU!
As for Santa Claus is Comin' to Town...what is the name of the grouchy Mayor???
TIP OF THE DAY...The Christmas Spirit is just waiting for you to catch it!
Friday, December 3, 2010
Looking forward to 2011
You will be receiving your renewal letters this weekend or even early next week. I apologize about the delay but I have had some MAJOR computer problems. Hence, I have purchased new software for next year. The software will be installed mid-January. Please be patient while we learn the ABC's of it.
As for the renewals, you will notice that Grub Control is included in your price. Why did I do this...the letter explains the reasoning. I saw many...MANY destroyed (not just damaged but destroyed) lawns this past season due to NOT using Grub Control. Therefore, I included the Grub Control in your pricing. If you prefer not to have this service (God only knows why) then just call me to discuss the pricing. You should know that I was debating whether or not to make the Grub Control service mandatory...that is how strongly I feel about the service.
Yes, I understand that not all of you will experience Grubs. So, yes...the Grub Control is like insurance. When (not if) you get this service, your Grubs will not do any damage. If you choose not to get this service and Grubs visit your lawn...WOW!!!!!!!
You'll also notice that I threw in a 'freebie' for next season if you pay in advance by the end of the year. I don't want to mention what freebie it is now since some of you have yet to receive your letter. Needless to say, the freebie is a VERY IMPORTANT SERVICE and you should get it every year, without hesitation!
TIP OF THE DAY...Ice Melt works!

RENEWALS...
You will be receiving a renewal letter for next year's service. Although I would like to send this via email, it is done better by letter and snail mail.
Within this letter you will be receiving the usual 5% discount if you pay in full before the season begins. In addition, if you return your check by, I believe, December 31st, you will be receiving a special service FREE! I would tell you now but it would ruin the surprise. So, check your mailboxes soon. I'll be mailing these letters out in the next few weeks
TIP OF THE DAY...Read ALL of my posts (why not?)!
Just can't seem to finish season (not complaining)
Although ALL of my Thumbies have had their lawns winterized, new clients keep calling me to service their lawns. They either want Lime, Aeration, Winterizer, any combination of the three or ALL three. You know me, whatever they want, I'll be happy to provide!
However, it will be getting a little too, for a lack of a better term, 'mushy' to do the aerations soon. So, I'll have to undoubtedly turn some people down but I'd rather lose the money than ruin their lawns (hey...who said that?????).
TIP OF THE DAY...Read my next blog!

Season over - HIRING A TECH
The 2010 season has just ended and wow...what a season. Business-wise, this was my best year yet. As I have said before, I could NOT conduct my business the way I do if it were not for YOU...the client. Again, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
As for my lawns, well...some did not look so good. I always feel so bad when I go to a client's home and the lawn looks like a bomb went off! It has taken me a couple of seasons to realize that it is not my fault. I know that may sound like common sense but it's hard not to feel a tad bit responsible. However, if the client does not water their lawn in the middle of a drought, well...there is nothing I can do...PERIOD! As soon as it rains, the lawns are beautiful again, instantly!
I have said this for years: In the spring, I am a god. Come August, I am the devil! Too bad I can't control the weather 'cause I'd be a millionaire.
ATTENTION: I am looking for a technician (someone to help me service my lawns). If you know of anybody that is not afraid of hard work and is, WITHOUT-A-DOUBT, trustworthy...please contact me!
Every post I write from now until I find a technician will have some request for you, my loyal Thumbies, to help me find an employee. Thanks in advance for all of your help!
New look to my blog: In the next weeks days, I will be changing my blog a bit...just a change of scenery. Any suggestions, as always, are welcome!
TIP OF THE DAY...Do unto others as you would have them do unto you! (simple but true)
Saturday, October 16, 2010
It's been a while
We are now beginning our 6th and final service for the season. This service is a winterizer. I'm waiting (and also chose a different winterizer) a bit longer to service so the material will last longer in your soil. Although it costs me more than last year's winterizer, the price remains the same for you.
TIP OF THE DAY...Can't live with them, give me another beer!

Greener grass yet?
The rain should be helping your lawns BIG TIME!!! As you know, it takes 3 ingredients for a nice lawn...food, water and proper mowing. If one of the three is lacking, your lawn suffers. I can only do ONE part - that is obviously the feeding part. It is up to you to do the proper mowing part. It is then up to God to provide us with rain...right? Well, yes and no. God will provide whatever we need (in SO many ways) but you can also water your own lawn. I talk to many people that say, "Wow, I wish it would rain so my grass could grow". I'm guessing they do not have an outside hose?!?!?!?!?
TIP OF THE DAY...To open a faucet, remember it is righty-tighty, lefty-loosy!
Thursday, September 23, 2010
Why is my lawn brown / gray?
The following are dangers we are now experiencing in our lawns:
* Brown (brown/yellowish) lawns are due to heat stress and/or scalping by mowers. Now, none of my Thumbies are experiencing this because they KNOW to water their lawns and NOT to scalp their grass when they mow, right.....right?
* Gray lawns could be due to insect infestation. The Sod webworm is chewing-up many lawns in the area. "Doc, how do I know I have the webworm"? You'll know when you walk thru your lawn (or while your mowing) and gray-to-white moths are flying around. The Sod Webworm has already done it's damage at this point. Chemical control is somewhat useless since trying to control flying moths is like Lindsay Lohan trying to stay out of the tabloids...not gonna happen! I will be offering an insect control service next year to combat these critters.
* Voles...just call me, I'll take care of them for you!
* And yes, let's not forget my nemisis the grub! If your lawn has grubs, you will see the damage NOW. If you have skunks in the area, you will see MASSIVE DAMAGE NOW! But, I know that my Thumbies ordered grub control and they have no damage, right...right?
TIP OF THE DAY...Continue to mow your grass high since it is still a tad bit hot out there!

Job Opening
Thanks to all of you, I am in need for a technician for the upcoming 2011 season. A technician's duties, among others, would be to service lawns. Apply fertilizer and weed control using our PATENTED machines, spray trees and shrubs, Aerate lawns, etc. If you know of a person that has two main qualites:
Trustworthy
Hard Worker
please contact me via phone (724) 493-9384.
The reason that I said, "thanks to you" is that I have grown beyond my wildest dreams. I love what I do and it makes me SO proud that you also love what I do. Although I spend thousands on marketing, most of my clients are acquired through referrals...people like you telling your family and friends about Lawn Doctor. Again........THANK YOU!!!!!!!

Fall 'To Do's'.................
Remember, fall is THE TIME to prepare your lawn for next spring. What should you do? Well, as always, I am here for you! The following includes services we provide (of course) and cultural practices you should be doing:
***Aeration is the NUMBER ONE, BEST service you can do for your lawn.
***Lime is crucial to the growth of your lawn. In soutwestern PA, most of our lawns are..........rock and clay. Lime will help break-down the clay, increase the pH of your lawn and prepare your grass for next year.
***PowerSeeding will increase the density (thickness) of your grass. If you have never seen our powerseeder....WOW, you just don't know what you are missing. Like ALL of our machines, our powerseeder is patented. (hint: nobody, NOBODY else in the world has this device).
***Mow your lawn a little shorter before aerating and powerseeding. This helps the tines of both machines get down to the soil easier.
***Keep the leaves off your lawn (I think this is self-explanatory)
***MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL.....enjoy God's grace of fall. It is a wonderful time of year. The smell of leaves, the freshness of rain (hopefully), wearing a sweatshirt with shorts, sitting around roasting marshmallows and yes....the STEELERS!
TIP OF THE DAY: Life is too short to take everyday too seriously. Relax and enjoy the ride, because it won't last forever. Remember, every ride has a beginning and an ending!

Answer time!
I've had many, MANY answers to my quiz...some right, some wrong and some, well...way out there! Note to Thumbie Andrew, you may want to ask Santa for a globe for CHRISTmas. And for Thumbie Rebecca, you may want to ask Santa for a bar of soap for CHRISTmas since you are on the naughty list!!!
Anywho, all of you who sent in answers...I thank you! To those who sent in the wrong answer, better luck next time but again, thank you for trying. If you don't try, then you will never win (oops, did I say win!?!?!?). To those of you who sent in the correct answer...GOOD JOB. However, I can only award a prize (oops, did I say prize!?!?!?) to ONE Thumbie. By rights, the Thumbie who responded first will be the winner.
And the winner is.......................................Jane P.
Thanks Thumbie Jane. Your answer of Mackinac Island was correct! So, what did Jane win? She won a FREE Core Aeration for her lawn, for which I will personally do. Congrats!!!!! See, it pays to play!
TIP OF THE DAY...Always send in an answer to my quizzes since I most always give away prizes!

Quiz Time!!!
My wife and I (yes, and the baby) took a couple of days to re-energize. Can you guess where we went?
First clue: Drove several hundred miles
Second clue: Rode a ferry
Third clue: Somewhere in Time
Take a guess...there might be a prize!?!?!?!?!?!
TIP OF THE DAY...Aeration is one the BEST cultural services you can do for your lawn!

It's time for a rain dance
This message is for all of my new Thumbies (you veterans...you already know this). Lawn Doctor is in the business of creating and maintaining beautiful lawns. Lawn Doctor is NOT in the business of spreading fertilizer and killing weeds. Although we do this...this is not our main priority. Are you confused yet??? Well, I'll get to the point. I've received a couple of phone calls from new clients asking why we are not servicing their lawns.
My answer, long story short, ..."the weather is not cooperating". These clients have been burnt (literally) in the past by lawn treatment companies who fertilize everyday...no matter what the weather. As all of you veterans know, that is not what I do. In fact, this is one of the ways I separate myself from the rest of the pack.
I explain to the clients that when it is raining, you will NOT see me servicing, except for a light drizzle. And, when the temp is about 85 degrees, chances are you will NOT see me servicing. Now, with temps above 85 degrees and no rain, I just can't service. Sure I CAN service but, ethically and morally, I just can't. It doesn't make any sense to me to spread dry fertilizer on dry grass...with no rain in sight. If this makes me behind on my scheduling (and you know how anal I am about my timing), then so be it.
TIP OF THE DAY...When the sun is up, your watering should already be done!

Weeds, drought, crabgrass
The lawns are beginning to bounce back...be patient. However, the drought has caused many problems. First, as we all know, weeds seem to grow faster than grass. Why...who knows? But, all I ask is to have patience! We service your lawn every 5 to 7 weeks. Alot can happen to a lawn within a month's period. As I always say, call me if you begin to see weeds. We cannot be walking across your lawn everyday like you do so let us know ASAP.
Second, no water causes no growth. It's just that simple. With no growth, the sun can get into the soil and germinate weeds. What is the best way to have a weed-free lawn...it is to have a thick, lush lawn so the weeds are chocked-out. Try going a couple of days (even a couple of weeks) without water and sit out in 90 degree weather. What would happen to you? Not all of us can install an irrigation system but we can at least water our lawns...in the morning.
Lastly, you may see crabgrass sprouting up here and there. Why is this happening? When the ground is dry (like your skin) it cracks. When the ground cracks, crabgrass germination begins. Even though we serviced your lawn with 2 crabgrass preventatives, that was back in the spring! Also, the heat is a MAJOR cause of the crabgrass growing...have you noticed that the crabgrass is growing near sidewalks, driveways, etc.? These hard surfaces give off much, MUCH heat. Feel the brick on your house...ouch that's hot!
If the crabgrass is real bad, we can come and spray it. But remember, the crabgrass will die-off with the 1st or 2nd frost in the fall. I realize that 'frost' is hard to imagine now but it will happen.
TIP OF THE DAY: Patience is a virtue...even with lawn care!

Thumbies, Thumbies, Thumbies, ...
Please, for the sake of all mankind...please help your neighbors when it comes to mowing their lawns. I know you realize that how you mow your lawn (ESPECIALLY NOW) is very critical. Please share your wisdom by letting them know their lawns should not be cut less than 3 inches during the very hot months of summer. Springtime...2 1/2 inches is the height and we all know to have our last mowing a wee bit shorter to eliminate snow mold over the winter into early spring.
Sooooooooooooooooooo, help out your neighbor and use your handy-dandy grass measurer to measure their grass so they DO NOT cut it less than 3 inches.
TIP OF THE DAY: The best way to control weeds (besides calling the LAWN DOCTOR) is to have a nice, thick lawn that shades away any sun that weeds may need to germinate!

Lawns looking sad?
Are your lawns looking sad? Well, without water...you would also be sad. If you have plants in your house, just imagine NOT watering them for a couple of weeks. Yes, I know it has rained within the past few weeks but not substantially. When you water your plants (inside or outside), you tend to give them enough water for a couple of days. So, your plants use this water to grow and in a couple of days, they are watered again...never thirsting for more water. However, when your lawn is not watered, it will begin to shut down. The human body is composed of approx. 55% to 60% water (give or take). A single grass blade's water consistency is even higher than this. Try (though I don't suggest this) not drinking water for a couple of days...! In addition, when your lawn is teased with a stray shower or by you just sprinkling it, the roots tend to grow UP to search for the water. This will then cause your lawn to look thin since the root system is not substantial.
So, what have we learned: No water makes your lawn look like Nancy Pelosi at 5:00am...yuck!
Solution: Never wake-up next to Nancy Pelosi AND water your lawn less often with more water vs. more often with less water. For example, water each section about 15 to 20 minutes at a time - IN THE MORNING...NEVER AT NIGHT! Depending on the weather, you can water every other day. This past week, I had our irrigation system on every other day, beginning at 5:00am and ending by 7:15am. After about 10:00am, the weather is too hot and the water tends to evaporate. Keep in mind that overwatering your lawn can result in drowning your lawn (it will take on a blackish look) and diseases will occur!
TIP OF THE DAY: Water your lawn and keep a safe distance from N.P.!

No Servicing Week of July 5 thru July 9, 2010
As most of you know, I will NOT service lawns when it is above 85 degrees. Some people (certainly, not Thumbies) ask why I don't? Well, spreading dry material on dry, VERY DRY grass is not healthy for the grass. If the lawn is not watered within 24 hours, 'burning' of the grass may occur. Then, they ask, "If this is the case, why does my brother-in-law have a lawn service in Florida that services year around...and the weather is much hotter down there than up here?" My answer is simple...southern states have warm season grass while we here in PA have cool season grass (more specifically, we are in a transition zone). The grass in the southern states can handle the dry material on dry days...but can't handle the cool weather. In PA, we are somewhat the opposite. Although our grass can handle the cold AND hot weather...very hot and dry weather causes damage. Any more questions?
TIP OF THE DAY...WATER YOUR LAWN EVERY MORNING THIS WEEK!

Happy 4th of July
Can you believe it is July already? Seems like yesterday that I was preparing my machines for spring servicing. Well, it actually was yesterday that I was preparing my machines but it was for M3 servicing (summer). Remember, this servicing is nitrogen and weed control, as needed. Grub control (preventative) is completed. Any grub control applied after July 4th is risky. Also remember, this nitrogen will be decreased a little since the weather is normally dry...to prevent burning.
Now...for Japanese Beetles......
BEETLES...Can’t Buy Me Love!
Japanese Beetles will soon be giving you A Hard Day’s Night and wrecking havoc on your trees. Within days, the local home improvement stores will look like a Revolution has occurred with frantic customers purchasing bag-a-bug bags. My recommendation is to Come Together and NOT purchase beetle bags. Hey Jude…why would you want more beetles flying over your lawn and plantings than you already have? Maybe you like the thought of changing the beetle bags on a weekly basis, all the while seeing hundreds of half-dead beetles crawling over each other. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, why tolerate the distinctive aroma of dying insects?
Spreading grub control would have eliminated most of the beetles that are presently chewing on your plantings. However, if you neglected to use grub control Yesterday, you can still prevent your trees, shrubs and plants from looking like Helter Skelter. Spraying your trees with a control product will not only control beetles, but will also prevent your green trees from looking like swiss cheese. At this point, you have two choices:
1. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds theory – hope the beetles fly away to Strawberry Fields Forever.
2. I Got To Get You Into My Life Lawn Doctor (should have been a big hit!!) – call the Lawn Doctor today.
You have spent much time and money to make your lawn look beautiful. From Me To You, think twice about those beetle bags. And remember…calling your Lawn Doctor today is your Ticket To Ride to keeping the Beetles away!
TIP OF THE DAY...Spray now and you WON'T pay later!

Summer Tips
Here are some tips (that a true Thumbie already knows):
* Water lawn after grub control has been applied. The water is needed to activate the control!
* Lawn Doctor chooses not to service lawns above 85 degrees.
* Red Thread should be making its way out of your lawn by now.
* Look-out for Brown Patch and then Rust in the late summer / early fall.
* Over-fertilization of a lawn can burn the grass. Unless you plan on watering your lawn...CONSISTENTLY...please don't expect a very green lawn in the summer. Kentucky Bluegrass - Ryegrass are cool weather grasses.
* Water your lawn in the MORNIING...never at night!
* Mulching is much better than bagging your lawn.
* Lawn Doctor referral system gives you $25 off your next service

Grub Control reminder
Just a reminder...the grub control needs to be watered-in. If it rains the day we service, then you lucked-out. But, if it doesn't rain within 48 hours...soak that lawn!

Waiting it out...servicing
Sitting in my office, waiting for the rain to pass so I can go out and service lawns with Grub Control. It is frustrating owning a business where one of the variables to getting your work done is the weather - a variable that you can NOT control.
Although I want to get out and service lawns, I am very, VERY lucky and blessed. I pretty much live by the weather channel and all the talk is about floods. My heart goes out to those individuals that lost their lives (as well as their loved ones) in the floods at the Arkansas campground. Also, the flooding in Oklahoma...4 feet of water coming down the street. These people had no flood insurance since they were not in a flood zone (chance of a flood was 1%...yes one percent!!!). So, I can't feel too bad sitting here at my computer looking out and seeing a drizzle of rain. Thank You God!
TIP OF THE DAY...Be grateful, everyday, for what you have - cause it can change in a blink of a eye!
Monday, June 14, 2010
Here I come to save the day...
Grub control is on the way! The next 2 to 3 weeks will be 'grub control servicing' only.
REMEMBER.....grub control works better if it is watered in. In fact, the label states it MUST be watered in to work. Although I don't totally agree with this, it won't hurt. So, if you have an irrigation system like I do (God bless the person who invented this!!!), set it for the day AFTER I service. If not, please wait till the next day to water. Why...I may be spot spraying some clover and I'd prefer it to be totally absorbed by the weed.....thanks!
TIP OF THE DAY...When the Lawn Doctor talks, people listen! (I know it is not a tip but, oh well, you get the picture).

Grubs
I know that you know that the grubs know that you know they know where to go for a 'good time'. These creatures are looking forward to chomping on your thick, lush, green grass. BUT...all you have to do is one simple thing (if you haven't already)! Call the LAWN DOCTOR and order grub control. Because (again, I know you know this) if you choose not to get grub control now and grubs chomp on your lawn...you gonna have some BIG problems come fall.
TIP OF THE DAY...Give in to temptation and keep up with the Jones' lawn - order grub control NOW!

Red Thread
Red thread is here! What is it? Why do I have it? How do I get rid of it?
What is it...Red Thread is a fungus that is caused (as most are) by hot days, cool nights and wet weather. Add them all up and you got yourself a perfect recipe for Red Thread! Small spots on the grass blade that appear water soaked enlarge and cover part of the leaf blade. As the spots dry, they fade to a light brown. Pink webs bind the grass blades together and the fungus forms thin (red / pink) gel spots at the top of the grass leaf...hence RED THREAD.
Why do I have it...The reason you have it is that Red Thread attacks healthy Kentucky Bluegrass and Ryegrass. Most of us have this grass combination in our lawns.
How do I get rid of it...There are two ways to control this fungus. The first is to wait it out and MAYBE the fungus will not get worse and go away in a few weeks. The second is to have me come to your lawn and spray a fungicide on your grass. NOTE: this fungicide will not kill / control Red Thread but is will stop it from progressing and getting worse. Also, regular feeding of your lawn, which is what we do, will help to control the disease.
Cultural practices you can do: Mow your lawn with a bagger and get rid of the grass. Wash your mower and shoes. I've had some clients even soak their mower blades in clorox. Is this necessary...that is a question only you can answer.
At the very least, if you see signs of Red Thread, please call me!
TIP OF THE DAY...If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's probably Red Thread!

I'm Back!!!
I've been a little busy recently with all of the new clients that I have gotten. No...I am NOT complaining. As all of my Thumbies know - without them, I would not be in business. I owe everything my Lawn Doctor franchise has to them and they know it!!!
But, yes...it's been a little busy but things have settled down a bit. It always does this time of year. Most people by now have chosen their lawn care company. And, if they didn't choose me, well, they will see why Lawn Doctor is the best come early fall!
Concerning lawn care -
* I just purchased a Honda push mower,,,,,and LOVE it! I can't believe how good it mulches! I try to buy American but somwtimes it is very hard to do this when you know that a foreign product is just, well, better. You just can't beat a Honda engine!
* GRUB season is approaching - SO PURCHASE GRUB CONTROL! It's just that simple.
* Red thread is now the diesease of choice but it always is this time of year. Cool nights, warm / hot days and rain. This is a perfect recipe for any fungus.....especially Red thread. Remember, we can STOP the PROGRESSION of Red Thread by spraying your lawn with a fungicide.
TIP OF THE DAY...You have to crack an egg to make scrambled eggs!

It's Raining, It's Pouring, the Dandelions are in Mourning (sorry...I tried!)
Sorry I have not blogged in a while but I've been kinda' busy...thanks to all of you! This has been the best year for my business!!! The postcards I distributed, the frisbees I tossed out and the home shows really have gotten the Lawn Doctor name out. I know you realize that no other lawn care company can compete with Lawn Doctor...but there are still people out there that do not realize this. I know, I know...it sounds crazy but it is true.
But, I've learned that the key to my business is marketing, marketing, marketing. The more people that know about Lawn Doctor, the more clients I get, the more income I make, the more I budget for superior products, research and development and yes...those little goodies I leave in your bags with your invoices.
As for lawn tips...remember NOT to mow your lawn too short. I know that with our treatments, your grass grows thicker and longer than your neighbors and you may not want to cut your grass as much (which is insane!). However, hot weather is approaching and all of your hard-earned money and sweat will be wasted if you scalp your lawn.
TIP OF THE DAY...Spread the word about Lawn Doctor. Remember, referrals will get you $25 off your next service!

On to Round 2 (no...I'm not talking about the Pens but GOOD LUCK anyways)
We'll be starting Round 2 of servicing on Monday (weather permitting). M2 (Maintainer 2) is the same as M1. As always, weed control will be used...as needed. I would like to write more but I'm going to spend time with the most special person in my life...my Turf Tamer! Just kidding...my wife and I need some alone time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TIP OF THE DAY...Happy wife, Happy life!

1st Round Complete
By now, all of you have had your first round (M1 = Maintainer 1) completed! As you are well aware, this treatment was for:
Crabgrass Control (Dimension)
Fertilizer (Dimension)
Weed Control (Momentum FX)
Dimension is a wonderful fertilizer and crabgrass control product. I have been using this ever since I purchased the Lawn Doctor franchise. To date, I have NO complaints, problems or even suggestions to use a different product. In fact, I am one of the very few (if not the only) companies that does 2 rounds (M1 & M2) of Dimension. My reasoning is this: in case the fertilizer did not reach the edge of the lawn the first time, it will reach the edge the second time (sometimes where the grass meets the driveway, sidewalk or curb, the heat from the pavement/sidewalk can germinate crabgrass). Also, Dimension has post-emergent properties that will control any crabgrass that may still be around.
Long story short...you will not have crabgrass come late-summer / early-fall.
TIP OF THE DAY...If you see dandelions popping-up, it's okay. Just give me a call and we'll come out and 'control' them!
Monday, April 19, 2010
Thank You, Thank You, Thank you
That's just about it...THANK YOU! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to help you create a beautiful lawn. The more Thumbies I get, the more research I can do, which, in turn, will give you a more beautiful lawn...period!
So remember, with each prospect you refer to me and they sign on with Lawn Doctor...you receive a $25 discount on ANY service.
TIP OF THE DAY...Refer EvErYbOdY you know to Lawn Doctor and you could receive a free service!

It's Raining Green Lawns
Regardless, keep your mower deck setting on 2 1/2" to 3". Don't 'cut off the green' so you don't have to cut more than 2x per week. I know we all get busy with work, family, kids, etc., but remember your pledge order: God, Lawn, Family, Lawn Mower, Work.
Thanks again to ALL of my new clients and a special thanks to ALL of my returning clients. Without you...there would not be a Lawn Doctor!
TIP OF THE DAY...Beware of infomercials at 2:30am. Even though your favorite Hollywood star may look like they love the latest and greatest exercise machine...they are a paid spokesman.

Servicing to begin tomorrow
I can't wait to get out there and service your lawns. I've been holding off due to all the moisture in the grass. Many...MANY other companies have been out there for a couple of weeks servicing. Are they 'on the ball' or are they just getting out early to 'just get done'. I know what I think...you are obviously entitled to your opinion. But just note, everyone of my Thumbies that I've been talking to agree that it is too wet to fertilize. Not that the fertilizer will hurt the lawn...it's just that tracks will be made in the lawn that may take some work to remove.
I've walked over 70 lawns in the past few weeks doing evaluations (yes...over 70) and each and every one feels like I'm walking on a soaked sponge. You decide!
TIP OF THE DAY...Bag your first mowing only if your lawn has NOT been fertilized!

New Thumbies...WELCOME
To all my new clients...THANK YOU for trusting Lawn Doctor to help you make your lawn beautiful. Some of you have never heard of me (that's not surprising), some of you received my postcard in the mail (sorry about having to stare at my mug on the front), some of you received the frisbee on your driveway (hope the plastic didn't poke a hole in your car's tires) and some of you were referred to me from a friend. No matter how you chose Lawn Doctor, again...THANK YOU! ! ! ! !
Make sure you rake the leaves off your lawn, pick-up the twiggs from the trees, remove any material from your grass BEFORE you mow. Try to let your lawn dry-out before you mow. I know you are anxious...so am I...but patience will prevail!
TIP OF THE DAY...Go to your doctor and demand free care...they did!
Thursday, March 18, 2010
I'm back, baby!
Picture a plant in your home. You water it everyday for a week. By the 2nd or 3rd day, the pot will begin to over-run. The same is with the grass. Sure there is several feet of soil underneath the grsss to absorb the water and...NOT! People, people, people...this is Western PA! Our soil is, at the most, 3 to 5 inches deep of good soil while the rest is clay and rock. So, where does the water go...good question. Where will the fertilizer (liquid or granular) go...good question. Did Joanie really love Chachi...good question.
So, as for me servicing...I will be out next week to spray trees and shrubs and plan on sevicing lawns the following week - weather permitting.
TIP OF THE DAY...3 words - - - Turtle Oreo Blizzard!

Snow's melting...for now
Well, my wife thinks I'm crazy (wow...that's a big surprise) but I'm planning on servicing lawns begining March 15th. I just can't figure out how I can blow the snow off one part, service, then blow the snow back on the serviced part...without taking two hours per lawn. Oh well, that's why I'm the doctor - I'll just have to find a way to make it happen.
Many folks are calling complaining about moles. I just tell them that I can't control the moles at this point since the ground is still snow covered. Even if it wasn't covered, it is still frozen. So, my advice is to have a little patience and when the weather breaks, I'll take care of the moles!
TIP OF THE DAY...Put The Health Of Your Lawn In My Care!

Preparing for the STORM OF THE CENTURY
Thumbies…all I have heard for the last 24 hours is snow reports. Yes, I enjoy skiing but WOW…enough is enough. This is Pennsylvania and it is February – do the math! When haven’t we received large amounts of snow in January / February? Sure, there make be record snowfalls but, oh well, that’s mother nature.
Just remain calm! No need to panic, drive to the grocery store and stare at the bare shelves. It’s as though the weathermen/women have a deal with grocery stores. The very minute they mention the word STORM…people flock to stores to stock-up on food. When is the last time you ran out of food in your home? When is the last time you were snowed-in? Sure, natural disasters are horrible but in this part of the country, we are pretty lucky.
So, again, relax and just use common sense. How will the weather affect your lawn? There will be minimal to no affect (is it affect or effect?). Just try to use a snow blower verses plowing or stacking mounds of snow too high on your lawn. As for the snow…enjoy it, it is one of God’s beautiful miracles.
TIP OF THE DAY…When making a snowman, the carrot is used for the nose…!

Punxsutawney Phil
Thumbies…You already know the list of Lawn Doctor’s MOST WANTED: Grubs, Beetles, Spiders, Sod Webworms, Emerald Ash Borers, Black Ants, Fleas and Ticks. Now, you can add TWO MORE to the list…
JUST KIDDING! ! ! ! !
I didn't know Phil wore glasses! Even though Phil saw his shadow, I hold no ill will towards this little rodent. Of course, with 1 BILLION watts of light shining on him, how could he not see his shadow?!?!?!
Irregardless (which, by the way, is not a word), we will have 6 more weeks of winter. I guess I’ll just have to stock up on some more scotch!
You may want to continue starting your mower (like you have been all winter…right?) every couple of weeks. This will help the carburetor from clogging.
TIP OF THE DAY…Buy Punxsi Phil some sun glasses!

Thumbies…I am officially on Facebook! Please check-it-out and post comments here on my blog.
Also wanted to tell you I attended the Westmoreland Chamber of Commerce’s Prayer Breakfast this past Friday. As always, this is a refreshing event. Centered around God our Creator, this early morning breakfast (7am) consists of a couple hundred business men and women coming together for fellowship. Of course, I was also there marketing Lawn Doctor.

Thumbie Renewals
Hello Thumbies. By now, you all should have received your ‘Thank you for renewing’ letters. As it states in the letter, thank you to all of my loyal clients who permit me to help them create and maintain a green, weed-free lawn. Without my clients, well…there would be no Lawn Doctor of Irwin-Greensburg.
It may sound simple but it is true. Many businesses forget that if it weren’t for their clients / customers…they would have no business! Many companies have the idea that they are providing a service for the client and that the client should be grateful to them. Sure, I am providing a service for you. However, you have taken a chance on letting me use my expertise on your biggest investment…your home. Some people say grass is grass and it’s no big deal. Well, these people just need to be locked-up in a padded cell!
Seriously though, I look forward to seeing all of my thumbies this spring. Servicing, as I always say, will begin in mid to late March…it is really up to God. I’m guessing that we are going to receive one more big snowfall (yippy…I love skiing) and then we can prepare for the arrival of spring. Keep your fingers crossed that spring will come early and maybe, just maybe, it will.
TIP OF THE DAY…If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we’d all have a Merry Christmas! (popularized by Don Meredith)

Voles
With the snow melting, I’ve been receiving many calls concerning moles. 9 out of 10 of them are calls concerning voles (Voles…not moles). Moles you will most likely never see, thy make ‘humped’ tunnels and up-earth your lawn and/or mulch. Moles eat grubs and earthworms. Moles I can control – voles I can not. A vole (just a fancy term for a field mouse) eats insects and the turf of your lawn. They will also leave a tunnel in your lawn, but no soil / dirt has been dug-up.
A vole can be controlled by a simple mousetrap (for all of those who can’t stand the thought of ‘controlling’ a mouse, stop reading now and just send me a blank check. I’ll stop by in the fall to reseed your lawn). I usually use a mousetrap from Home Depot which goes by the name Victor. It is beige in color, has a big red ‘V’ on it and looks like a potato chip bag clip.
Squeeze the one end of the clip / trap and place the open end GENTLY within the tunnel, so the vole can run through it. The vole will run through and WHAM! No bait is needed. However, if you have pets or children, please keep them both away from the traps. One to two traps over a tunnel should do.
TIP OF THE DAY…Don’t watch the news, it’s too depressing. If something important is happening, one of your friends will let you know!

Getting Antsy
Thumbies…did you notice that the snow has melted!?!? If you see me out servicing your lawn this week…don’t be surprised. Well, you know I am just kidding! We have many, many more days of snow and cold weather but I’m still getting antsy to get my hands dirty.
With these ‘warmer’ days, don’t forget to lightly (LIGHTLY) rake-off some of the snow you piled on your lawn. Break it up and scatter it so it will melt evenly.
TIP OF THE DAY…Comment, Comment, Comment, Comment, Comment, Comment, Comment, etc.!

Haiti Earthquake
Let us all take a moment away from obsessing about lawn care and concentrate our thoughts on the people of Haiti. The conditions the Haitians had to live under before the quake were simply awful. Now, I can’t imagine what is going to happen to the society.
The families who have lost loved ones and the friends who have lost friends… this is just beyond comprehension. The devastation and the stench of death must be overwhelming. I just hope that the suffering was at a minimum!
May God please be with EVERYONE affected by the deadly earthquake and may those who have perished from the disaster…may you rest in peace.
TIP OF THE DAY...HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEETHEART !

We Have A Winner!
What are the 2 words that drive me crazy. . . . .
GLOBAL WARMING
Patricia, a long-time Thumbie, answered the question correctly. To be honest, I had just posted the comment and BOOM…she answered. Either Patricia was anxiously awaiting my next post or she was very, very bored and just happened to be perusing the net and found my blog. I’d like to believe the first explanation but we all know the second explanation is more of a reality.
Whatever the reason, thank you Patricia and I look forward to Aerating your lawn this fall. Since Patricia’s lawn is larger than 5,000 sq. ft., she will receive a credit for $82.50 towards her Aeration.
TIP OF THE DAY…Take chances in life, you just might win (like Patricia did)!

Home Show
Just putting in a plug for my Home Show appearance this year. This is my third year having a booth at the Home and Garden Show (behind Westmoreland Mall). This year’s dates are February 19th – 21st. Please stop by the booth and say hi. I always enjoy meeting my Thumbies. Bring a friend and maybe get $25 off your first treatment…if they sign up for a full year!
SEE YOU THERE!!!
TIP OF THE DAY…Double standards are a two-way street!

Snow, snow and more snow
I love the snow for many reasons, but my top two are:
1. Skiing
2. Water table for the spring is increased.
It seems no matter how much snow we receive in the winter, there is always an alert in late spring / early summer about an impending drought? Oh well, I guess that is why many, MANY people are making millions from two words…! Hmmm, I just had an idea. Do you know what two words I am thinking about?
Let’s do another contest. The first Thumbie to answer correctly will receive a FREE Aeration (up to 5,000 sq. ft.) in the Fall. Remember, the answer has to be the exact …the EXACT two words that drive me crazy!
TIP OF THE DAY…Polar bears can swim!

Where was I has just ended!!!
We have a WINNER! Thumbie Martin has correctly answered ‘Where Was I’. The answer…Seven Springs. I encourage all of my Thumbies to spend at least a weekend up in the mountains. We had a very nice time skiing and relaxing.
As for Thumbie Martin, he just won himself one free service (for his particular lawn…this equals a savings of $91.67). The old cliche holds true, “You snooze you lose.”
More contests will be arriving soon!!!!!
Concerning lawn care, make sure you prepare your lawnmower for the spring. I realize there is snow on the ground (and it is literally snowing as I write) but grass-cutting season will be here before you know it.
TIP OF THE DAY…If you wear glasses and they always steam-up when you come inside from the cold try this: walk backwards when entering through the doorway. You may get a few looks and even take a tumble backwards, but your glasses will not be steamed-up!

Where Was I (5)?
Thumbies,
My family and I just returned from taking some much needed time off. The question is where were we? The fifth, and final clue, is this:
5) I was going to give you 7 clues, but with after five, I thought you could SPRING into action.
Concerning lawn care...try to break-up the snow that you may have thrown on your lawn. It may sound crazy but it will save you dealing with snow mold come spring.
TIP OF THE DAY...Purchase Pure Melt from your local Lawn Doctor (ME) and snow mold will not occur!

HAPPY NEW YEAR ! ! ! Where Was I (4)?
Thumbies,
My family and I just returned from taking some much needed time off. The question is where were we? The fourth clue is this:
4) Recognize this picture? Name the location below to win the prize! ! !
Concerning lawn care...watch plowing snow in your driveway. Making room for your vehicle and keeping ice off the surface is important. However, going outside the borders will only cause more work come spring (replanting the grass you destroyed – not to mention going to confession to confess your sins of grass damage).
TIP OF THE DAY...New Year's resolutions are, for the most part, unrealistic goals that fade away before spring! Set goals that are challenging AND realistic!

Merry after Christmas greetings
Where was I (3)?
Thumbies,
My family and I just returned from taking some much needed time off. The question is where were we? The third clue is this:
3) If we would have been there for Christmas, Santa could have had easy access with his sleigh.
Concerning lawn care...keep an eye out for moles and voles. When the snow is melting, you will see dirt mounds (moles) and trails in the snow / grass (voles).
TIP OF THE DAY...Regifting is okay (just make sure your regift is not an original gift from the giftees)!

Christmas Greetings
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY................................!
('Where was I' to resume next week)
Tuesday, December 22, 2009
Where was I (2)?
My family and I just returned from taking some much needed time off. The question is where were we? The second clue is this:
2) Skiing (maybe we were water skiing / maybe we were snow skiing)
Concerning lawn care...did I mention the first one of my Thumbies to comment AND guess correctly receives one free fertilizer service?????
TIP OF THE DAY...When someone offers a free fertilizer service just for answering a quiz correctly, post a comment!
Sunday, December 20, 2009
Where was I (1)?
My family and I just returned from taking some much needed time off. The question is where were we? The first clue is this:
1) 7th heaven
Concerning lawn care...try not to continue to ride the sleds down the same path in your lawn again and again and again. Although this will not destroy your grass, the area may be stunted in the spring.
TIP OF THE DAY...Santa Claus is coming to town!

Comments
I'm looking for your comments. I realize that you are probably busy winterizing your lawn mowers, re-spooling your weed wackers and sharpening your fingernail clippers for those stubborn blades of grass but I still need your feedback. Remember, winter is a lonely time for me. No grass means no life! Sure, I have a beautiful wife who loves me, a baby girl who could not be any sweeter and a puppy that is just perfect but again, no grass...no life!!!
Send me your comments, your questions...anything! Lawn withdrawal is setting in and I need to know that I am not alone.
TIP OF THE DAY...There's no place like home (except if you're at a resort, listening to nature music while receiving a deep-tissue massage from a Swedish blonde with big...hands...yeh...I meant to say hands. Oops, I drifted off again!).

Global Warming
The following concerns Kentucky Bluegrass:
If global warming was occuring, your lawn would look like the infield of a baseball field...dirt. Kentucky Bluegrass will NOT thrive in very hot weather, as most of my Thumbies know. Sure, we have some hot days but I don't think, as one bazillionaire put it, "The Earth has a temperature". Trees would not be growing, grass would not be green and flowers would not be blooming.
Have you been to Disney World...yeh, the one in FLORIDA? The flowers are beautiful! Isn't Florida in the south??? Wouldn't the south be even warmer if global warming existed? Yes, I know that flowers grown in the south are warm/hot season flowers. But, if the earth truly was warming, even southern flowers would not be blooming. To date, I have not heard of Disney World buying flowers from a northern state like Massachussetts because the amusement park couldn't grow anything. Sure, it may sound strange talking like this but let's get some common sense.
Mother Nature can not be controlled! She will do what she wants. All we can do is try and preserve the earth for our children. However, this doesn't mean trying to create 'green jobs'...which truly don't exist. Please name me ONE green job that is truly green? It also doesn't mean creating more hybrid cars. Are hybrid cars manufactured by green jobs? No, they are manufactured in facilities that use electricity. Where does electricity come from...coal. Does EVERY hybrid car come from a clean burning coal factory.......? Get the picture.
Your lawn will be just fine! Continue to mow and water your grass as usual. But of course, having Lawn Doctor feed your lawn is very essential.

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!!!
TIP OF THE DAY...Relax and enjoy the ride (this could apply to anything, especially mowing the lawn)!

Getting that Christmas Spirit
Well, this blog is supposed to be about lawn care so let's talk Global Warming!?!?! Some say it exists, some say it doesn't. Personally (and for those of you who truly know me...you know I tend to be, at times, blunt and not care about being Politically Correct!) I do believe in Global Warming / Climate Control but not what the media is spewing. I don't believe in man-made temperature changes but something has changed. No, I don't believe the Earth is warming (in fact, it is cooling - just ask the people who are wearing Global Warming jackets...yes, JACKETS!!!). We are not getting the snowfall (at least not in my area of the nation) that we used to get. I know people tend to exaggerate the truth when they look back to when they were a child but I'm not. We just don't have the snowfall like we used to. Sure it is cold, bitter cold some days but the snowfall is just not there. And that leads me into lawn care...kinda' like going to Pittsburgh from Irwin, via Altoona...
The snow is very good for your lawn. It brings the moisture table up and we need this due to our very dry summers. Remember to use rock salt sparingly around the edges of your driveways / walkways. Calcium Chloride is good but it may sting your wet hands and could possibly ruin leather shoes. Try not to let clumps of salt sit on your grass for long...it will kill it dead! Also, Pink Snow Mold will be evident in the Spring if you shoveled mounds of snow from the edges of your driveways / walkways onto your grass. There is no real way of getting around this except to not leave the snow there for very long. Either use a snow blower or go out and break-up the clumps of snow. Has Global Warming had an impact on grass growth? Tune in to future posts...!
TIP OF THE DAY...Believe in what you believe but don't believe just to believe!

Let's Not Forget Thanksgiving
I realize that it is all about timing, Black Friday, blah, blah, blah. Personally, I don't leave the house on Black Friday...never! As for the stores, they concentrate so much on Christmas that the meaning of Christmas has gotten lost over the past several years. The three Kings brought Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh - not Ipods, Laptops or even a lawn mower (oops...did I really say that?!?!?). Sure, Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh may not be that readily accessible but I think you get my point, again. Another thing that has been lost is good old COMMON SENSE!
This holiday season, beginning with Thanksgiving, think about what you are truly (TRULY) thankful for. I bet (along with a green lawn) your list will include God, family, friends, etc. and not many (hopefully none) material items.
TIP OF THE DAY...Nothing says, "Merry Christmas...Peace be with You" like a Lawn Doctor gift certificate!!!

2010 Discount Deadline
Last week should have been the last time you mowed your lawn. The grass is staying wet and the growth has slowed. Notice I said 'slowed' and not 'stopped'. Many people think their grass grows from spring until winter, goes dormant, then 'pops' in early spring. This is wrong when it comes to Kentucky Bluegrass, the grass that covers most of our lawns here in Southwestern PA. True, other grasses do go dormant in the winter, but not Kentucky Blue.
The time period for Kentucky Blue to go somewhat dormant is in the summer, when there is little water and very high heat. Kentucky Blue spreads by rhizomes (horizontal roots) and this is what can fill-in those bare spots. Root growth is at its highest rate in fall and spring, its lowest is in the summer. Soil temperature for root growth is best when it is near 60 degrees (F) and at its worst above 70 to 80 degrees (F). Hence, I like to seed in the fall and never in the summer. Seeding in the spring can be a bit tricky with the cold weather, crabgrass control (which controls ALL seeds...including grass seed) and the approaching summer weather. The old saying holds true, "Plant grass in the fall for a nice lawn in the spring". I'm sure there is a catchier phrase...but you get the picture.
Once again, thank you for your early renewals!
TIP OF THE DAY...Conservatives and Liberals both tie their shoes the same way...one just does it better!

Mow Your Lawn This Week!
Preparing your lawn for the winter should be a fairly simple process...if you have kept up with your lawn all year. Trim your ornamentals / perennials, remove your annuals and rake your leaves. Thumbies always ask me about the leaves on their lawns. In a perfect world, a lawn should not have leaves on it over the winter. But, this is not a perfect world and a few leaves left on the grass will not hurt. However, you should still try to remove most of the leaves - NOT mulch them with your mower. Excess dead stems, roots, leaves and other organic debris contribute to thatch.
The layer of thatch in your lawn should not exceed 1/2 inch in depth. The thicker the layer of thatch, the more difficult it is for fertilizer and water to penetrate the roots and soil. I'm always asked if I de-thatch lawns. No...I do not believe in de-thatching since most de-thatchers destroy any layer of thatch. Remember, Mother Nature put that layer of thatch there for a reason.
TIP OF THE DAY...Scotch and Pizza - breakfast, lunch and dinner of champions!

Everybody's workin' for the weekend!
Although I'm sad that I'll not be servicing lawns until March, I am happy that I now have time to prepare for next year. I have so many ideas I could just burst. Some of these ideas will be posted but some will occur next season.
Thumbies...look out! Next year is gonna be a great year!!!!!
TIP OF THE DAY...Don't take any wooden nickels (unless you like collecting wooden nickels)!

I have the shakes!
Well, this is the first day for me not servicing, yet it is also the first day for me to begin planning for next season. Who's kidding who, I'm so anal I already have the next five years planned but don't tell anyone. Looking forward to your feedback and remember, write to the Lawn Doctor today to receive helpful info. tomorrow!
